Chapter 17

Never having sex. Those words echoed through my head. Holy shit. What was I going to do? I wanted her so bad it hurt. No, I didn’t just want her, I desperately needed her. Never?

“Not all sex is bad or painful like that. Only monsters would take someone against their will. Sex should be sacred and good.”

She shook her head, and, at that moment, she looked so young and scared. I just wanted to pull her into my arms and hold her forever. Or kiss away all that darkness and show her how very different sex could be. I didn’t dare make a move towards her again though.

“You really need to talk to someone about this, Mirage. This isn’t healthy. I don’t know what you saw or experienced in there, but it’s clear it was bad. I wish to God I could have been there to save you sooner. Maybe you should talk to Lachlan. He’s really helped me out, though if you tell him I said that I’ll deny it.”

“Lachlan? Why would I want to talk to him?”

“He’s sort of like the Force’s shrink.”

“Shrink?”

“Yeah, a psychologist. He’s helped a lot of people who have experienced trauma. He helps you talk things through and get to the root of the problem. It’s not like he can fix it, but he can help you fix it, if that makes sense. And he’s a good listener if you’re willing to talk, and an arrogant pain in the ass who will patiently sit there and wait if you're not.”

She nibbled on her lower lip, and I wanted to reach out and caress it, but her response to me kissing her had traumatized me a bit too.

What the hell had they done to her in there? I needed to know if we were ever to move past this.

“It’s late. Why don’t you take the bed? I’ll sleep on the floor tonight.”

“What?” she asked, looking torn and confused.

“Mirage, I will never purposefully hurt you in any way. You are the most precious person in the world to me. Do you even understand what it means to be true mates?”

She sucked in a sharp breath and nodded, but the look on her face wasn’t convincing.

“I know enough.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

She shook her head. “Not tonight. I’m really tired, Colin.”

I gave her a sad smile and nodded resolutely. Cautiously, I held out my hand to her and helped her to her feet and then into bed. I tucked her in but didn’t dare join her. Instead, I stretched out on the chair and footstool next to the bed.

“Sweetheart, how long have you been in the collection?” I asked softly.

“Only a few months for this one. I liked it there though. The others took me in like family. And he never really asked for much. It wasn’t so bad.”

My heart broke for her. To think that was enough for her. I supposed the bar for me had been set pretty low, but it hurt knowing she’d had to live like that at all.
